SoHo is probably the most diverse neighborhood in lower Manhattan and has a long history leading up to its present day presence and notability. Today, many consider SoHo as the 'heart and soul' of New York City.
SoHo literally means; south of Houston (pronounced "how-stun") street, north of Canal Street, and between Sullivan and Lafayette Streets.

Many artists banned together to make SoHo the center of creative activity for a very magical time in the 1960's. SoHo came to represent the hip, avant garde scene. Today SoHo is synonymous with trendy shopping, world class art galleries, and cast iron buildings.
It has become a popular backdrop for use in many movies, for fashion shoots, and one of the best places in the city to catch a glimpse of movie stars and other celebs, many of whom live here full time. Because of it's unique history and architecture SoHo became a favorite movie set, used by many movie and TV directors. It's look and feel has been copied in many movie lots. SoHo has been used as a location to such movies as Men In Black, Ghost, Unfaithful, Hitch, Little Nicky, Spiderman, Raising Helen, Sex and the City, plus many more. It is however, much more than just a movie backlot. Within a quarter of a square mile, SoHo has an estimated 250 art galleries, four museums, nearly 200 restaurants, and 100 different stores, many selling very chic and expensive fashions and other wares..
These blocks south of Houston (pronounced HOW-ston) and north of Canal streets are home to the city's largest concentration of the cast-iron fronted buildings, originally built as warehouses and manufacturing spaces, but converted to living spaces, called "lofts," for the multitudes of artists and sculptors who appreciated the larger spaces offered here. These architectural gems are prized by preservationists and the well-heeled bohemians of SoHo who call this neighborhood home.
